A podcast

dedicated to the joy of writing, even when it’s hard. Or when there are killer robots to deal with.

Stephanie and Trevor are writers, neighbours, and friends on two very different writing and publishing journeys. They join forces to examine everything related to writing - craft, business, lifestyle, and more - and do deep-dives on the pop culture that informs their creative lives. Along the way, they’ll tell some stories of their own, and ask you to do so, too.

Stephanie Anne

My name is Stephanie Anne and I am an oddball extraordinaire. I’m known for my wild outfits, strange behaviour, and undisputed status as a crazy cat person. But I’m also a self-published author.

I recently left my part-time job to write and publish full-time. Although I still take on contract writing jobs to help pay the bills, I am completely devoted to the lifestyle of the self-employed “starving artist.” But it’s hard to call yourself starving when your favourite hobby is cooking.

I have always had a fascination with outsiders in fiction, which has led to my love of monsters and robots. Over a decade ago, I thought I would become exclusively a sci-fi author, but I have since learned to embrace the darker side of life. Now horror is my main passion, although those pesky robots and post-apocalyptic scenarios still find their way into my stories. I draw inspiration from family and generational trauma, as well as those troubling “what if?” moments I encounter in my daily life. Like, what if popsicles were sentient?

My writing assistants are Minerva, Finn, and Bubs. Unfortunately, these free-spirited felines like to sleep on the job. When they’re not begging for food, they can be found sleeping on my lap or desk, pressing random buttons on my keyboard, or judging me for my creative choices. And yes, if you follow me on social media, you will see plenty of cat pictures.

Trevor LaForce

Trevor writes a little bit of everything and for everyone. His fantasy novels are for lower- and upper-middle-grade audiences (think Rick Riordan and Kwame Mbalia) and his suspense and thriller work (think Stephen King in his least horror-y moments) is for adults. There are a few kid lit works in progress as well (imagine Shel Silverstein as a big ol’ space nerd).

He works full-time in resource development, instructional design, and e-learning development, leading the education team for a national not-for-profit. Before that, in the classroom, he did a little bit of everything to everyone, too, from history to communications technology and integrated arts to English and writing craft.

When he’s not working or writing, he’s chasing around two teens and a preschooler, spending time with his utterly awe-inspiring wife, adoring his labradoodle, and maintaining an uneasy detente with the cat. He enjoys canoeing and paddlemaking, cooking, 3D printing, technology, and going way overboard with his kids’ Halloween costumes.

Trevor’s writing goals - beyond getting agented and published, naturally - include building a portfolio of work for many ages and stages of readers. The goal is to explore ideas and histories and identities at many levels, connecting picturebooks to first chapterbooks to meaty novels. While this may out him as a big nerd for curriculum development, on top of everything else he’s a big nerd for, it’s true.
